Integrated Monitoring of Environmental Flows

The Integrated Monitoring of Environmental Flows (IMEF) is a scientific program for assessing the ecological benefits of the environmental flow rules in the regulated Gwydir, Namoi, Macquarie, Lachlan, Murrumbidgee, and Hunter River Valleys and the Barwon-Darling River. Ecological benefits of these flow rules include reduced algal blooms, increased wetland biodiversity, more abundant native fish and more natural ecosystem processes. The aims of the environmental monitoring program are to:

  • better understand how wetting and drying affect biodiversity and ecosystem processes in rivers and wetlands
  • measure changes in water levels, habitats, animals, plants and ecological processes after the release of environmental water
  • estimate the likely long-term effects of environmental water
  • provide scientific information that is needed to review water sharing plans.
