Physical Features

Tallow creek estuary is contained within the Cape Byron Marine Park. Its lower reaches are located within the Arakwal National Park. The upper catchment is primarily urban containing the centres of Suffolk Park, Byron Hills and Baywood Chase. The lower catchment is largely natural vegetation, dominated by she oaks, banksia, eucalypt and paperbark but with a high degree of weeds.

  • Tallow Creek has an intermittently closed/open entrance to the ocean on Tallow Beach. The entrance has on occasions been artificially opened.
  • South Byron Sewage Treatment Plant discharges treated wastewater directly to Tallow Creek near its ocean entrance.
