Media Release - Department of Water and Energy Date: 1 July 2009 COMMENCING WATER ALLOCATIONS FOR THE GREAT ARTESIAN BASIN The Department of Water and Energy today announced Available Water Determinations (AWD) for groundwater sources across the State, for the new 2009-2010 water year commencing on 1 July 2009. An AWD has been prepared for each category of access licence for the water sharing plan for the Great Artesian Basin Water Sources. In the Surat, Warrego and Central Sources, local water utility and domestic and stock water licence holders will receive 100 per cent of entitlement. The share components of aquifer access licences authorised to extract water from the Surat, Warrego and Central Sources will be 1 megalitre per share unit. In the Eastern Recharge Groundwater Source the allocation for local water utility licence holders is 100 per cent, while the share components of aquifer access licences authorised to extract water from the Eastern Recharge Groundwater Source will be 0.8 megalitre per share unit. For the Southern Recharge Groundwater Source, local water utility licence holders will receive an allocation of 100 per cent. The share components of aquifer access licences authorised to extract water from the Southern Recharge Groundwater Source will be 1 megalitre per share unit. To ensure that the groundwater systems in the Great Artesian Basin remain healthy and productive in the long term, it is critical for the Department of Water and Energy to balance the competing needs of the environment with those of water users. Additional information on AWDs is available on the Department of Water and Energy’s website: www.dwe.nsw.gov.au Alternatively, licence holders can phone their local DWE office for more information.
