Media Release - Department of Water and Energy Date: 1 July 2009 COMMENCING WATER ALLOCATIONS FOR THE LOWER MACQUARIE GROUNDWATER SOURCES The Department of Water and Energy today announced Available Water Determinations (AWD) for groundwater sources in the State’s Central West, for the new 2009-2010 water year commencing on 1 July 2009. An AWD has been made for each category of access licence for the water sharing plan for the Lower Macquarie Groundwater Sources. The AWD made for the Lower Macquarie Groundwater Sources provides a 100 per cent allocation to local water utility and domestic and stock licence holders. In the Lower Macquarie Groundwater Sources, aquifer access licence holders receive a 1 megalitre allocation per share unit. In Zones 1, 3 and 4 of the Lower Macquarie Groundwater Sources, supplementary water access licence holders will receive a 0.6 megalitre allocation per share unit. Supplementary water access licence holders are reminded that supplementary water allocations in the Lower Macquarie Groundwater Sources may be taken at any time and at any rate during the current water year, subject to any restrictions announced by the Minister. To ensure that the groundwater systems in the Macquarie Valley remain healthy and productive in the long term, it is critical for the Department of Water and Energy to balance the competing needs of the environment with those of water users. Additional information on AWDs is available on the Department of Water and Energy’s website: www.dwe.nsw.gov.au Alternatively, licence holders can phone their local DWE office for more information.
