The Department of Water and Energy today announced Available Water Determinations (AWD) for groundwater sources in the State’s North West, for the new 2009-2010 water year commencing on 1 July 2009.

An AWD has been made for each category of access licence for the water sharing plan for the Upper and Lower Namoi Groundwater Sources has been prepared.

The AWD made for the Upper and Lower Namoi Groundwater Sources provide a 100 per cent allocation to local water utility and domestic and stock licence holders.

In all Upper and Lower Namoi Groundwater Sources, aquifer access licence holders will receive a 1 megalitre allocation per share unit.

In Zone 1, Borambil Creek Groundwater Source, of the Upper Namoi Groundwater Sources, supplementary water access licence holders will receive a 0.76 megalitre allocation per share unit.

In Zones 2, 3, 4 and 8 of the Upper Namoi Groundwater Sources, and the Lower Namoi Groundwater Source supplementary water access licence holders will receive a 0.6 megalitre allocation per share unit.

In Zone 5, 7, 11, and 12 of the Upper Namoi Groundwater Sources, supplementary water access licence holders will receive a 1 megalitre allocation per share unit.

To ensure that the groundwater systems in the Namoi Valley remain healthy and productive in the longer term, it is critical for the Department of Water and Energy to balance the competing needs of the environment with those of water users.
