Media Release - Department of Water and Energy Date: 30 January 2009 RED ALERT FOR BLUE GREEN ALGAE AT YANCO Acting Chairman of the Murrumbidgee Regional Algal Coordinating Committee, Richard Scott, today issued a red alert warning for potentially toxic blue green algae at McCaughey Park, Yanco.
Routine monitoring by the Leeton Shire Council has detected high counts of blue green algae in McCaughey Park’s ornamental lake. Leeton Shire Council has advised that the town water supply is not drawn from this lake so there is no risk to drinking water sources in Yanco or Leeton. Water is drawn from the ornamental lake to water McCaughey Park, so all users of the park are advised to avoid contact with water in sprinklers and drippers. The ornamental lake is closed to all recreational uses such as swimming, boating, fishing and yabbying. The water is not suitable for drinking or cooking.
Pet owners are advised to keep animals from drinking the water while the red alert is in place, however recreational land such as picnic areas will remain open.
Blue Green algae are potentially toxic and may cause gastroenteritis, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting if consumed. Skin rashes and eye irritation can occur with significant contact.
Regular monitoring will continue and further warnings will be issued once new results are received.
