Media Release - Department of Water and Energy Date: 9 May 2009 FURTHER DOWNGRADING OF RED ALERTS IN THE MURRAY AND EDWARD RIVERS Chairman of the Murray Regional Algal Coordinating Committee (MRACC) Richard Scott today announced that the red alert for blue green algae in the Murray River from Albury to Boundary Bend west of Swan Hill, had been downgraded and replaced with the lesser amber alert. The announcement follows analysis of the latest water samples in the region. “’As expected the onset of the cooler weather has seen the number of potentially toxic blue green algae drop in most of the river. “We have downgraded the alert in the Murray from Albury through to Boundary Bend to an the Amber alert; this also includes Lake Mulwala, the Gulpa Creek at Mathoura, the Edward River at Deniliquin and Moulamein, and the Wakool River at Kyalite. “Under an amber alert, water users are advised not to drink untreated water, but it is safe for all other uses,” Mr Scott said. “The previous high counts in the Euston weir pool are declining, so the red alert for Euston and Robinvale may also be downgraded once results become available next week, “he said Information updates about blue-green algae blooms and red alert warning areas can be obtained from the Regional Algal Coordinating Committee free call Algal Information Hotline on 1800 999 457.
