MURRAY RED ALERT BLOOM OVER

Chairman of the Sunraysia Regional Algal Coordinating Committee (SRACC) Owen Russell today downgraded the red alert for blue green algae in the Murray River at Euston and Robinvale to the lesser amber alert .

“Under an amber alert, water users are advised not to drink untreated water, but it is safe for all other uses, he said.

“Results in today show that the number of toxic blue green algae has dropped sufficiently to remove the red alert in the Euston weir-pool ending almost 10 weeks of red alerts in the Murray River that at its worse, saw over 800 kilometres affected,” said Mr Russell.

Mr Russell advised all water users to use personal discretion at all times when using any water not from a treated town water supply and to avoid contact with water that has a visible scum or has a musty or septic odour.

Information updates about blue-green algae blooms can be obtained from the Regional Algal Coordinating Committee free call Algal Information Hotline on 1800 999 457. Further information can also be obtained from the Department of Water and Energy’s website www.dwe.nsw.gov.au or Lower Murray Water’s website at www.lmw.vic.gov.au
