Acid sulfate soil risk maps

Acid sulfate soil risk map

Areas that contain acid sulfate soils have been mapped for the entire NSW coastline. The maps show:

  • probability of occurrence of acid sulfate soil (the map class description)
  • depth to acid sulfate soil
  • environmental risk associated with disturbing the soil.

They also give examples of typical landform types.

Custom (derivative) maps

Custom (derivative) map

Maps customised for many specific purposes can be derived from the data recorded for acid sulfate soil risk mapping. For example, derivative maps are produced for Local Government to assist planning.

Drainage network maps

The location and dimensions of all drains and engineered waterways within the coastal floodplains of northern NSW have been mapped, from Tweed Heads to Nabiac. Information on the drain control structures (such as weirs, culverts and other structures that significantly inhibit tidal flow or fish passage) has been included in a comprehensive database that includes digital images, which accompany each map.

The data is being used, together with hydrological modelling, to predict a range of outcomes and to develop management strategies for acid sulfate soils.

The maps are intended for publication and general distribution in 2007. Draft data may be obtained by contacting the senior, regional GIS officer, through your local DNR regional office. Technical enquiries can be emailed to acidsulfatesoils@dnr.nsw.gov.au.
