Barwon Region

Introduction

The Barwon Region covers the catchments of the three rivers in the State's northwest, the Macintyre (or Border Rivers), Gwydir and Namoi.

There are three wetland sites within the Barwon Region that are listed in the Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia. They are the Lower Gwydir, Lake Goran and New England Wetlands. These wetlands are considered significant because they support important or endangered flora and fauna species, and/or they are considered to have important cultural, commercial or scientific values.

Many other smaller wetlands can be found in river side channels and anabranches of these River systems. Boobera Lagoon, a wetland within the Macintyre Valley is considered to be the most important aboriginal site in South Eastern Australia.
